Saturated early morning light hits the buildings and architecture of downtown Wilmington Delaware

We want to take this opportunity to recognize the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) for advancing innovation. DelDOT’s early adoption deserves extra attention and praise around two efforts: the e-Ticketing Pilot program and the DelDOT phone app.

E-Ticketing

DelDOT began a pilot program for electronic ticketing (e-Ticketing) integration in December 2020 using a software system, HaulHub, to integrate e-Tickets for hot-mix asphalt suppliers around the state. E-Ticketing is an example of how the construction materials industry can innovate. Switching from paper tickets to digital platforms not only captures all project documentation from start to finish, but it can also improve work-zone safety while saving time and resources.

Delaware implemented the program after the Federal Highway Association (FHWA) Every Day Counts Round Six (EDC-6) initiative for e-Ticketing was introduced in 2019. They began the pilot implementation trial for asphalt initially but hope to expand to all subsets of the construction materials industry in the state. Delaware is also a Public Sector Participant with the National e-Ticketing Task Force, an organization created to support the FHWA EDC-6 Initiative in advancing the state of practice to digital project delivery.

“Using the data that these systems collect in an intelligent way is what we see as the ultimate goal,” DelDOT’s Project Controls Coordinator, Bill Sweeney said.

DelDOT App

The ‘DelDOT App’ for your mobile phone application is a resource for Delaware residents and travelers covering a multitude of offerings. The app has 12 different pages that relate to transit, travel, and news and provides real-time traffic impacts via video and congestion maps.

On the Delaware DMV page you can find information on the branches, sample driving tests, current wait times, and more. Drivers can also report issues through the 19 common options, like ‘Intersection Safety’, ‘Pothole’, ‘Dead Animal’, or selecting ‘other’ for those without a category. The app includes information on I-95 travel times that provides current congestion and flow information surrounding the Wilmington area. It has news, traffic radio, events and more.

The DelDOT App is an excellent example of how a state DOT can take advantage of modern technology and innovation to provide elegant solutions to its residents and travelers. The DelDOT app is available for download in the App Store and Google Play
